The downtown “No Idling“ initiative has as its purpose to improve health and air quality in the St. Louis region. Allowing vehicle engines to idle unnecessarily greatly contributes to poor air quality. Vehicle emissions have been linked to cancer, asthma, stroke, heart attack, and reduced learning capacity in children. Pollution from vehicles also contributes to the continued decline of the polar ice caps, reduced agricultural production, and damage to regional flora and fauna and cultural assets such as buildings and sculptures.
Vehicle emission reduction is accomplished with the installation of “No Idling” signage throughout the area in order to remind motorists to shut off their vehicles while not in use. Such an initiative is very visible and will promote St. Louis as a “green” city to encourage tourism and new business development within the area while helping us to reach attainment of acceptable air quality standards as set by the Clean Air Act.
Clean Air Saint Louis partners agree to install signage at their place of business in order to raise awareness of the City of St. Louis No Idling Ordinance and the harmful health effects associated with vehicle emissions. Responsibilities include payment for proper signage, and monitoring, maintaining and enforcing these areas. Educating drivers, staff, and contractors as well as regular delivery drivers is another important responsibility in order to raise local consciousness. Partners are also held accountable for promoting and protecting the Clean Air Saint Louis brand identity by properly using supplied logos and materials.
