Press Release

ST. LOUIS REGIONAL CLEAN AIR PARTNERSHIP ADDS CITY MUSEUM TO ITS EXPANDING LIST OF PARTNERS

ST. LOUIS, MO., SEPT. 1, 2006

The St. Louis Regional Clean Air Partnership (The Partnership) is pleased to announce that City Museum has signed on as a new partner for 2006, agreeing to work alongside The Partnership to educate St. Louis residents about the dangers of poor air quality and the steps they can take to clear our air.

To kick off its new role as a member of The Partnership, City Museum has designated an on-site Clean Air Coordinator (CAC). As CAC, Rick Erwin is ensuring that his fellow employees are aware of the daily air quality forecast by announcing it during the staff’s morning meetings and posting air quality information and tips on an employee bulletin board at the facility. Erwin is also keeping museum guests informed by making educational brochures on air quality and bookmarks featuring steps individuals can take to help clear the air available at the front desk, and displaying posters featuring the air quality forecast and additional clean air tips throughout the facility. In addition, a link to The Partnership’s website, www.clearair-stlouis.com, has been posted on City Museum’s website blog.

“We are very excited to have City Museum on board with us this season,” said Susannah Fuchs, Director of Environmental Health for the American Lung Association and spokesperson for The Partnership. “The facility is a top destination for St. Louisans during the summer months, and serves as a great indoor escape on poor air quality days, especially for children who are often the most vulnerable to the health effects of ozone pollution because their lungs are still developing. For these reasons, and more, we feel City Museum can play an extensive role in helping The Partnership increase regional awareness of clean air issues, and what can be done to improve the quality of the air St. Louisans breathe.”

Housed in the 600,000 square-foot former International Shoe Company, City Museum was the brainchild of classically-trained sculptor, Bob Cassilly, who along with his crew of 20 artisans constructed the entire facility from recycled materials found throughout the City of St. Louis. This unique, environmentally-friendly concept has helped to shape overall business practices at the museum, where many staff members carpool or bike to work and the environment is always top of mind.

“We strongly believe that most of the 600,000 annual visitors to City Museum share the same strong environmental consciousness as our founder, Bob Cassilly,” said Richard Callow, director of public relations for City Museum. “We have joined The Partnership for the same reason we limit the number of promotional materials we print and charge SUVs more to park in our lot; to increase awareness of important environmental issues like air quality.”

As the 2006 Air Quality Awareness Campaign winds down, The Partnership will be working with representatives of City Museum in the coming months to discuss additional opportunities for collaboration during the 2007 campaign. As a member of The Partnership, the museum joins more than 1,000 area businesses and organizations that are doing their part to help the region’s air quality. The St. Louis Regional Clean Air Partnership was formed in 1995, led by the American Lung Association, St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, East-West Gateway Council of Governments, Washington University and others, to increase awareness of regional air quality issues and to encourage activities to reduce air pollution emissions.
